Kochi to Goa South India Best Cycling Trail
Way back in the mid-1600s, a holy man named Baba Budan brought back seven germinable coffee beans with him while returning from a pilgrimage in Arabia. Since then, coffee plants have been flourishing in the hilly region of not just Chikmagalur, where he planted them, but also in the entire region of Coorg. The Baba Budan range is steeped in history, and its slopes are redolent with green bushes of fine Arabica and Robusta, the two variants of coffee grown here. We will be following his path to explore the coffee trails in India. This is a cycling adventure from Cochin to Goa, taking you through some of the best stretches in South India, covering three South Indian states. Enjoy the pleasant climate and roads with few cars as you cycle through lands of breathtaking scenery and rich culture. Experience various natural wonders along the route, from mountains and forests to waterfalls and beaches. Discover the wonders of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa, and see what makes each state unique.

DAY 1 & 2 Fort Kochi
A one-hour transfer from the airport takes you to Fort Kochi. Spend the rest of the day resting, overcoming jet lag, and preparing for your cycling adventure in the coming days. Cochin is the cosmopolitan center of Kerala. Your boutique hotel is one of the few in the colonial and heritage town of Fort Kochi. Some of the best spots in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry (the more historical hub) include the Dutch Palace, the Jewish Synagogue, St. Francis’ Church, the Dutch Cemetery, the Chinese Fishing Nets, Santa Cruz Cathedral, and more. The old-world charm, infused with numerous spice markets, antique shops, and art galleries, will amaze you.
DAY 3 Guruvayur
Today, after breakfast, we will embark on a cycling journey to Guruvayur, passing through a quaint fisherman settlement. Guruvayur is a significant pilgrimage town located in the southwest Indian state of Kerala. It is renowned for the centuries-old Guruvayur Temple, characterized by its red roofs, where Hindu devotees offer fruit, spices, or coins, often matching their body weight. Nearby, the Mammiyur Mahadeva Temple features shrines dedicated to the deities Vishnu and Shiva. South of the town, St. Thomas Church, believed to have been established by the apostle St. Thomas in 52 AD, stands as a historical landmark. Additionally, we will visit Anakotta, a lush elephant sanctuary home to over 60 elephants. Situated approximately 3 km from the renowned Guruvayur Temple, Anakotta is one of the largest elephant sanctuaries in the country.
DAY 4 Kozhikode
We will continue our cycling journey northward to Kozhikode, a coastal city in Kerala. Known for its historical significance in the spice trade, Kozhikode is near Kappad Beach, the landing site of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498. Central Kozhikode Beach, with its iconic old lighthouse, offers a picturesque spot for watching the sunset. In the evening, we will explore the town on foot and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in Kozhikode.
DAY 5 & 6 Wayanad
After an early breakfast, we will transfer for an hour to avoid the traffic from Kozhikode. Our cycling adventure will begin in the small village of Adivaram. Within the first 15 km, we will ascend with beautiful views. Wayanad is characterized by its captivating greenery, featuring misty mountains, lush forests, abundant wildlife, tempting coffee and tea estates, pristine rivers, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant folk culture. The Western Ghats Mountain ranges connect Wayanad to nature, making it a haven of heritage and culture. Travelers will find this hillside paradise enchanting for its traditions, customs, and wildlife. Known as the aesthetic land of spices, Wayanad is the perfect spot for a getaway.
DAY 7 Coorg
Today, we will be cycling to Coorg, the land of Cauvery. Coorg, a district in Karnataka, is renowned for its scenic beauty, adventures, and exceptional hospitality. Often referred to as the ‘Kashmir of the South,’ Coorg is surrounded by picturesque hills, making it a prime destination for adventure enthusiasts. After a sixty-kilometer ride, we will transfer to a hotel in Coorg to rest and rejuvenate.
DAY 8 Hassan
Today, you will pedal through country roads shaded by the ‘Flame of the Forest’ trees, and occasionally pass under the sprawling Banyan and coconut groves. As you cycle through these scenic routes, you will witness the beauty and unique culture of rural India first-hand. Your destination for the day is the historic town of Hassan. Upon arrival, you will check into a beautiful theme resort where you can unwind and enjoy the serene surroundings.

This elevation provides a refreshing climate and picturesque views.
DAY 11 Kundapura
The next day, your ride will take you through Agumbe village, renowned for its large population of King Cobras. The journey is lengthy, so you will cycle part of the way and then transfer to your destination. You will cycle until Kundapura town, surrounded by water on three sides. To the north lies the Panchagangavali River, to the east lies the Kalaghar River, and to the west lie the Kodi backwaters and the Arabian Sea. The south side connects to the main landmass.
DAY 12 Gokarna
You will pedal down from the mountains and follow coastal roads towards Gokarna, a small and remote holy town known for its four secluded and pristine beaches. In the evening, you will enjoy a delightful dinner at a special restaurant.
DAY 13 Goa
Once again, you will ride along the scenic beachside, with cliffs dropping off to the beautiful beaches below. This area is also known as the 'mango' belt due to the abundant growth of delicious 'Alphonso' mangoes. Karwar, an ancient site of sea trade frequented by Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, French, and later the British, holds significant historical importance. The picturesque Sadashivgad Fort stands by the Kali River, upon which Karwar is situated. From here, you will continue riding to the stunning beaches of South Goa.
DAY 14 Goa
Today marks the last day of cycling and an opportunity to soak in the beauty of Goa. Your ride will take you through the northern parts of Goa, passing through villages in the interior, along with visits to temples, churches, and historic bungalows. Take some time to visit the Bom Jesus Cathedral, a symbol of Portuguese sovereignty during their 400 years of colonial rule.
