Cycling along the canals & Villages

The Lower Back Roads E-Bike Holiday is a 6-day, relatively easy tour that begins in the historic town of Fort Kochi and takes you along the spice trails through Thattekkad, Thodupuzha, and Kumarakom. You will have the opportunity to see how spices and pineapples are cultivated and utilized by the people of Kerala. The scenic route passes through pineapple and rubber plantations in Thodupuzha, continues towards the backwater city of Alleppey, and concludes at the white sandy beach of Mararikulam. On this tour, you will experience cycling on both flat plains and hilly terrain.

DAY 1 Fort Cochin

After a one-hour transfer from the airport, you will arrive at Fort Kochi. Take this time to rest, adjust to the time zone, and prepare for your upcoming cycling adventure. Kochi is Kerala's cosmopolitan hub. Your boutique hotel is one of the few in the colonial and heritage-rich town of Fort Kochi. Key attractions in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry (its historic hub) include the Dutch Palace, the Jewish Synagogue, St. Francis Church, Dutch Cemetery, Chinese Fishing Nets, Santa Cruz Cathedral, and more. The old-world charm, combined with spice markets, antique shops, and art galleries, promises a captivating experience. After breakfast, you will choose your bicycles and embark on a short sightseeing tour of Fort Kochi. In the evening, we will treat you to a traditional cultural performance called Kathakali.

DAY 2 Thattekad

Leaving Fort Kochi early, we surprise you with a journey northeast to a hamlet called ‘Cherukunnam’. This village is crisscrossed with canals, surrounded by lush green paddy fields, coconut trees, and quaint villages. We bike along canal bund roads that lead us to the Edamalayar forests and the renowned Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, famous for its diverse bird species. The serene atmosphere, bird calls, and gentle breeze offer a rejuvenating experience. End your day with kayaking on Kerala's longest river and plantation walks. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary spans 25 sq km and houses over 200 bird species, including the large falcon, grey jungle fowl, white-breasted water hen, and hornbill. Another highlight is Bhoothathankettu, a scenic dam site. Enjoy your stay at exquisite resorts or camps amidst Kerala's natural splendor.

DAY 3 Thodupuzha

Today, we cycle alongside the Periyar River and traverse through villages to reach the charming Dewalokam homestay. Along the river, you'll experience the essence of a traditional Keralan village. Thodupuzha, located in the Idukki district of Kerala, is renowned for its hilly terrains abundant with flora, perfect for leisurely plantation walks. A stay at Dewalokam offers a unique opportunity to relax in a peaceful and unspoiled environment. Enjoy freshly cooked meals made from home-grown produce, savor gourmet traditional Keralan food, and participate in informal cooking sessions with expert chefs in our state-of-the-art kitchen. Our farm operates on organic and eco-friendly principles, supporting the local community and environment. We use solar power to heat water, cultivate vegetables with homemade compost, feed chickens and goats with vegetable waste, and even recover methane from cow manure for cooking gas.

DAY 4 Kumarakom

Today, we will cycle through undulating terrain, enjoying the scenic winding roads. Depending on the group's preference, we may stop cycling en-route and transfer to the resort in Kumarakom. The scenery along the way is absolutely stunning. Kumarakom is a cluster of small islands in the Kuttanad district of Kerala, renowned for its swaying coconut palms, expansive paddy fields, and meandering lagoons and backwaters. The area is dotted with beautiful resorts offering comfortable accommodations and leisure activities such as ayurvedic massages and yoga.

DAY 5 Marari Beach

After breakfast, you will have the opportunity to learn traditional coir (coconut fiber) making from a local outfit. We will bike along narrow routes, passing through numerous villages and temples on our way to Mararikulam, a charming fishing village by the beach. Marari Beach is renowned as one of the world’s top five Hammock Beaches by National Geographic. This region of Kerala boasts the highest number of bicycle users, and you may be surprised to see others joining us on our journey.

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Cochin airport to bid farewell to God’s Own Country.
