Western Ghats Trekking Holidays Kerala
- Start : Fort Kochi
- End : Marari Beach
DAY 1 Fort Kochi
You will be welcomed by our tour leader at the airport and transferred to Fort Cochin. Cochin is the cosmopolitan center of Kerala. Some of the notable spots in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry (the more historic hub) include the Dutch Palace, the Jewish Synagogue, St. Francis’ Church, the Dutch Cemetery, the Chinese Fishing Nets, and the Santa Cruz Cathedral, among others. The old-world charm infused with vibrant spice markets, antique shops, and art galleries will amaze you. Upon arrival, we will take you sightseeing in Fort Cochin. In the evening, we will attend a traditional cultural performance called Kathakali. Later, we will have a briefing followed by dinner.
DAY 2 Munnar
After breakfast, you’ll be heading to Munnar, the most beautiful hill station in Kerala. Munnar is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams – Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala. It is perched about 1600 meters above sea level and used to be the summer resort of the erstwhile British administration in South India. The drive takes about four to five hours, and the rest of the day is free for you to relax at the hotel and recover from the journey's jet lag and tiredness. In the evening, you can take a short walk to the market.
DAY 3 Rodo Valley
We will start early as we head along paths over the undulating mountain grasslands and ascend Meesapulimala, standing at 2680 meters – the second-highest peak in the Western Ghats. The trek passes through sholas (high-altitude rainforests or cloud forests) and mountain streams that crisscross the area. The region is also home to wildlife, notably elephants, sambar, sloth bears, and the Nilgiri tahr. When we reach the summit, we will stop to rest and enjoy the panoramic views. After a short break to feast your eyes on the stunning view of forests and tea estates in the valleys below, you’ll begin your descent to Rhodo Valley, where you will stay for the night.
DAYS 4 Yellapatty-Munnar
Witness the spectacular sunrise from Rhodo Valley, accompanied by the cool mountain breeze. The Valley of Rhododendrons, nestled between the Shola forests, will provide you with a heavenly experience and many astonishing views of the Western Ghats. After the trek, we will transfer back to Munnar. Following breakfast, we will start the trek from the mansion and head further into the woods to Yellapatty. Walking through the Shola Forest and grasslands, you will be able to enjoy the serene natural beauty of the area.
DAY 5 Suryanelly
In the morning, after breakfast, you will be transferred to Suryanelli, a rural town located 30 km from Munnar. Once you drop your belongings at the hotel, situated about 5500 feet above sea level, we will climb to Phantom’s Head to witness the hills come alive in the morning with the songs of the Malabar Whistling Thrush and the magnificent sunrise over the Butterfly Forest, famous for the mass migration of butterflies in October and November. You can also visit the tribal village of the Muduvans, known for their unique tradition of carrying their children on their backs. The Muduvans have lived in the upper reaches of the Western Ghats for centuries. In the evening, after the trek, you can relax at the high-altitude camp hotel as the sun sets, leaving the lush green forest in the darkness of the night.
DAY 6 Mathikettan Shola NP
Today you will start the day refreshed with a hot cup of tea in the cool winter morning at Suryanelli. After breakfast, we will head to the Mathikettan Shola National Park for the day's trek. This national park is home to Asian elephants and Nilgiri langurs, as well as a variety of endemic fauna and flora. Set amidst cardamom spice plantations, Shanthanpara is known as the capital of spice cultivation, a distinction that has made Kerala famous and attracted traders from all over the world.
DAY 7 Periyar
After breakfast, we will move to Periyar. The tropical rainforests here still hold many mysteries and unique flora and fauna species. The rainforests at Periyar are among the densest in India. The well-laid-out trails within the park offer a unique and excellent way to explore these natural wonders. These dense forests and open grasslands are home to large animal populations, including elephants, gaur, deer, Nilgiri langurs, bonnet macaques, leopards, jungle cats, and, most importantly, tigers. Our journey will take us through the deepest parts of the rainforests, walking in the company of local trackers and guides. Upon arrival in Periyar, we will check into the hotel, and in the evening, go on a three-hour walk into the rainforest.
DAY 8 Alleppey
We will transfer to Alleppey, where we will be met by the houseboat. Houseboats are remodeled versions of Kettuvallams (in the Malayalam language, "kettu" means "tied with ropes," and "vallam" means "boat") The houseboats are luxuriously furnished, featuring a thatched-covered living room and dining area, and, depending on the size, several bedrooms that typically include twin or double beds (with mosquito nets) and a bathroom with a toilet and washbasin. As you embark on the boat at noon, you will be welcomed in the traditional backwater style with garlands and a refreshing drink of coconut water straight from the coconut itself – a truly refreshing start to a wonderful cruise.
DAY 9 & 10 Marari beach
In the morning, after breakfast at 9 am, you'll venture out onto stunning stretches of acreage. After bidding farewell to your captain and crew, you'll learn about traditional coir (coconut fiber) making from a local outfit. Then, transfer through villages and temples as we head to Mararikulam, a fishing village by the beach. It is rated as one of the world's top five hammock beaches by National Geographic. You'll have time to relax, enjoy Ayurvedic massages, and unwind on the beach.
DAY 11 Departure
After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Cochin Airport to bid farewell to God’s Own Country.
