DAY 1 & 2 Gangtok

When you arrive in Bagdogra, our drivers will transport you to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. As Sikkim is the second smallest state in India, Gangtok isn't a sprawling metropolis but a charming city perched at 5,800 feet above sea level. It lies along the historic trade route between India and Tibet. Today, we will depart early from the hotel to embark on the Gangtok to Hanuman Tok loop. As you ride through town, you’ll be greeted by the smiling locals and prayer flags fluttering along the mountainsides, setting a positive tone for your Sikkim bike tour. This extended ride will take you to Gangtok’s highest point and back. After lunch, we’ll visit Gangtok’s Handicraft and Handloom Emporium, where you can explore a variety of local handicrafts and hand-woven fabrics. Look out for Thankas (Tibetan wall hangings painted on cloth), carpets, as well as items made from cane, bamboo, and wood. Following your shopping excursion, you’ll enjoy a delicious local meal in town in the evening.

DAY 3 Rumtek

We will set out early this morning for the pilgrimage town of Rumtek. The Rumtek Monastery, built in the 16th century by Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje, is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the state. Our ride starts with a 20 km downhill journey, followed by a climb back up to our next hotel. Due to the initial traffic, you may use the backup shuttle at any time if needed. While the road can be bumpy, you'll get used to it as you leave central Gangtok behind. Along the way, you’ll pass paddy terraces, with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze and vibrant gardens blooming at each quaint house. At Rumtek, we will check in at Hotel Teen Taley, an eco-friendly resort featuring landscaped gardens, comfortable rooms, and exceptional hospitality. The food here is prepared with traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients, and the charming ambiance of a bygone era adds to the soulful experience of these valleys. After lunch, we’ll join the worshippers at Rumtek Monastery. The monastery houses a Golden Stupa that contains the relics of the 16th Karmapa. Rumtek Monastery is also known for its vibrant Tibetan festivals, including the Tse-Chu Chaam, Kagyat Dance, and the lively celebration of the Tibetan New Year, Losar.

DAY 4 Temi Tea Garden

The journey from Rumtek to Temi Tea Garden, Sikkim’s sole tea estate, is both long and challenging. It begins with a winding descent through rugged terrain, followed by a gradual climb up to the tea gardens. As the vast tea estates unfold before you, the effort will feel well worth it. After biking to Tarku, our lunch stop, we will complete the remaining stretch by shuttle vehicle. By the end of the ride, the stunning mountain views might leave you enchanted and eager for more. We will then drive from Tarku to Temi, arriving in time for a tour of the organic Temi Tea Gardens. Established in 1969, the Temi Tea Garden spans 440 acres, where you can observe tea pickers at work, carrying heavy baskets. Following the tour, we will check in at the government-run Cherry Resort, the only accommodation available at the top.

DAY 5 Ravangla

The journey starts with a gradual climb, where the calming green of the tea gardens gradually gives way to small villages nestled within wild forests. The route then levels off before descending to Ravangla. We will treat this day as a semi-rest day to prepare for the demanding climb scheduled for the following day.

DAY 6 Yuksom

Today's route is set to be one of the most breathtaking segments of your Sikkim cycling adventure—a long and challenging climb with unparalleled views all around. We will pause at Tashiding to explore the Tashiding Monastery, a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists. The monastery is said to be where the three Holy Lamas of Tibet converged in 1641 A.D. Situated on a conical hill, it is believed to be the location where Lhatsun Chenpo, Sikkim’s patron saint, constructed the renowned Chorten, or Stupa, of Tashiding Thongwa Rangdol. The tranquil ambiance of the monastery will leave you feeling deeply at peace. For the night, we will stay at Ejam Residency, operated by a friendly local family. Nestled in the mountains, this accommodation offers a chance to enjoy more local cuisine. Adventurous diners can try 'chhang,' a traditional millet beer that's potent and a staple among the hill communities.

DAY 7 & 8 Pelling

After breakfast, we’ll embark on today’s ride, which begins with extended downhill sections before shifting to rolling, uphill terrain. Along the route, you'll encounter several waterfalls, including the stunning Kanchenjunga Falls. If you’ve successfully turned enough prayer wheels to win favor with the Weather Gods, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga Range as you arrive in Pelling. Situated at 2,072 meters (6,800 feet) above sea level, Pelling offers a refreshing and invigorating atmosphere. Surrounded by charming villages, deep valleys, and forested mountains, this tranquil town provides a peaceful backdrop for your ride. On Day 2, we’ll visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, a significant landmark in Pelling. Founded in 1705 A.D., it is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim and is home to a wealth of ancient relics, wall murals, and sculptures. After lunch at the hotel, you’ll have some time to relax. We will then pack our cycling gear and prepare for the trek that begins the following day.
